Op een grote paddestoel

Op een grote paddestoel,
Rood met witte stippen,
Zat kabouter Spillebeen,
Heen en weer te wippen.
Krak, zei toen de paddestoel,
Met een diepe zucht,
Allebei de beentjes,
Hoepla in de lucht!

Maar kabouter Spillebeen
Ging toch door met wippen.
Op die grote paddestoel,
Rood met witte stippen.
Daar kwam Vader Langbaard aan
En die zei toen luid:
"Moet dat stoeltje ook kapot?
Spillebeen, schei uit!"

Zadelzwam / Polyporus squamosus

Eerder stond hier de naam Elfenbankje / Turkey Tail. Op het moment van ontdekken van deze paddestoelen, was het naastgelegen Natuur Educatie Centrum gesloten. Vandaag trof ik daar de nodige mensen in verband met een open dag. Een van de stafleden sprak me aan over deze pagina en heeft mij uitgelegd dat het hier niet gaat om elfenbankjes, maar om de Zadelzwam. Met de nadrukkelijke vermelding dat als deze zwam voorkomt op een boom, je grosso modo kunt aannemen dat de boom er aan gaat.

In an earlier version of this page the mushrooms were referred to as Turkey Tails. Only yesterday I visited the Nature Education Centre, close to the location of the mushrooms. An available biologist explained to me these are not Turkey Tails, but Dryad's Saddle fungi.

Most of the time when this fungus is on a tree, it means capital punishment for the tree.

Dryad's saddle / Pheasant's back mushroom

Polyporus squamosus known is with common names including Dryad's saddle and Pheasant's back mushroom. The name "Dryad's saddle" refers to creatures in Greek mythology called Dryads who could conceivably fit and ride on this mushroom, whereas the pheasant's back analogy derives from the pattern of colours on the bracket matching that of a pheasant's back. This mushroom is commonly attached to dead logs or stumps at one point with a thick stem. Generally, the fruiting body is 8 to 50/60 cm across and up to 10 cm thick. The body can be yellow to brown and has "squamules" or scales on its upper side.

Het is de tijd van het jaar dat paddestoelen van de soort "zadelzwam" voorkomen. Maar om er nu drie op een rij binnen een afstand van ongeveer 20 meter te zien kan wel bijzonder genoemd worden. Een wandeling met de honden met de camera paraat voor "je weet maar nooit" fotografie, verandert dan ineens in een fotosessie waarbij de honden zichzelf maar moeten vermaken. Dat lukte best. Ik kwam thuis met foto's en de honden git- en gitzwart van de modder omdat ze nu nét de verkeerde sloot namen om in te ravotten.

Inmiddels is een vierde exemplaar gevonden. Een fiks eind lopen van de andere drie verwijderd, toch zeker een 50 meter. De foto's van nummer vier zijn inmiddels ook gemaakt en op deze pagina geplaatst.

Even though it is the time of year that 'mushrooms' of the genus "Dryad's saddle" are to be found, 3 species on a row within a distance of only 25 yards, seems special to me. And a fourth one was found only 70 yards from the first three. The pictures of the fourth are on this page also. By reading you obvious will have noticed we call 'em 'elfen bank' a bench to rest for Elfs. The name Turkey tail is referring to one specific type of 'elfenbank', looking like the tail of a turkey.

All of these Dryad's saddles are growing on the tree 'Salix Alba'. In dutch known as 'knotwilg'. A willow of which the branches are cut back every second year. At the bottom of this page is an explanation about the 'knotwilg', because this tree is a cultivated 'man made' tree.

1. Een rustplaats / A place to rest

Diep verborgen, bijna uit het zicht. Bijna een meter lager dan het wandelpad, in de oksel van een gevorkte boom. De ideale plek voor een druïde om even uit te rusten.		Deeply hidden, almost out of sight. About one meter below street level, growing in the armpit of a forked tree. The perfect spot for an Dryad to find some rest.

2. De balkonscène / the royal balcony

De ideale plaats om als vrouwelijke druïde even te rusten van het brouwen van mysterieuze (tover)drankjes.

Dit exemplaar meet ongeveer 35 cm / approx. size is 13.7 inches

3. Aan de overzijde / at the opposite side

Recht tegenover de grote zadelzwam vinden we een iets kleiner exemplaar. Deze meet 'slechts' 23 centimeter.

Just opposite of the big one, there is a smaller one, about 9.05 inches in size.

4. Een kolonie / A tree filled with Dryad's saddle

De vierde boom blijkt een dankbare voedingsbron voor een complete kolonie zadelzwammen. Op vijf plaatsen op de dode boom.

Salix Alba / Knotwilg

This tree is a Salix Alba. In it's common form it is a cultivated tree. When the stem of the tree reaches 7 foot in height, the whole crown is cut off. From that moment all branches are cut at least once in two years. The new branches reach 7 to 14 feet each year.

By cutting the branches at the crown, the stem keeps growing in width. Growth in height is controlled by cutting the branches. Because the crown grows wider and wider, rain and moist will invade the core of the stem, making the stem very wet on the inside. After years, most of the time the stem will burst open finally. Even with the bursted stem they will survive for decades.

The cut of branches ( twigs) are uses for various purposes.

It is said that the "knotwilg" is an almost exclusively Dutch phenomenon. This tree will florish at the waterside, in wet soil. And because the crown is relatively small, the tree will not block other plants to grow close to the stem.

The bursted stem can be totally hollow after years and will be a place for birds to breed.
